Welcome from the Director
Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is the first institution of its kind in the world. As we are approaching our 125th anniversary, our expanding portfolio covers all aspects of the translational research cycle: from lab-based research, (clinical) field trials, to research uptake, policy implementation and evaluation: all aimed to break the cycle of poor health and poverty. In addition to our research we have an ambitious Teaching Expansion Plan. We are a partner in multiple local, regional, national and international collaborations. In our first solo submission to the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (REF), LSTM ranked second for impact in the UK.
We are delighted to be ranked amongst some of the major research institutions, with a combined score of 60% in the outstanding category, and 32% in the internationally excellent category for research. Our achievements would not be possible without our staff, and we are fully committed to developing career pathways and training, so that we attract and retain the very best scientists, and professional services staff.
We’re increasing our research portfolio through the appointment of strategic, cross- departmental senior research staff. Professional services are undergoing a strategic review to increase connectivity across departments and ensure that we have suitable resources as we expand. We’re also committed to increasing our portfolio and growing student numbers so that we can continue to play a vital role in educating future global health leaders. This means providing excellent staff and facilities.
The £2 million Pembroke House offers students state-of-the art facilities, allowing immersive experiences for students on site, and greater connectivity for those studying overseas. While much of our work is overseas, it is vital that we operate within truly equitable partnerships that benefit all involved.
This is often in the form of health interventions, such as clinical trials for drugs and diagnostics, or strengthening capacity among local researchers and doctors. As an institution founded nearly 125 years ago, the Senior Management Team, along with our Board, are committed addressing our colonial legacy and the issue of power imbalances within our partnerships, in order to progress so that LSTM can become a truly inclusive partner and place to work. If you would love to play an important role in leading our institution, and want to join a passionate, ambitious, and collegial team, I would be delighted to hear from you.
