External Relations
Introduction from Marie Gray, Director of Communications and External Relations
Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine was established in 1898 as the first institution in the world dedicated to teaching and research in tropical diseases. In 2023 we celebrate our 125th anniversary and have recently launched our new Strategy. It is an exciting time to join us and help tell our story to the world.
We are an institution which is delivering a significant impact. In the latest Research Excellence framework (REF 2021) we were ranked second in the UK for impact and 6th in clinical medicine. We have also recently received World-Leading Specialist Education Provider status from the UK’s Office for Students and are expanding our student offer.
Our scientists and researchers are undertaking impactful work and we are home to some of the world-leading experts in global health. With almost 600 staff, and in excess of 350 global partnerships, our people are delivering cutting-edge research and transformational teaching across the globe.
We have an ambitious new strategy with a vision to be recognised around the world for the quality and impact of our research and education and to be an institution where people want to work, study or partner with. And, we are looking for passionate, outstanding and engaged people to join our team to help us realise this vision.
Under the direction of our new Director of Communications and External Relations, we are investing in several new Marketing, Fundraising and Communications roles, at all levels. It is a fantastic time to join our expanding team and to help shape drive forward our activities in reputation building and profile raising.

External Relations
Our External Relations team has recently been created, bringing together expertise across Communications and Marketing as well as Corporate Events, Public Engagement and Web. We are moving towards a more service-focused function and over the coming months will be establishing new service models to help us drive forward LSTM’s ambitious plans.
We are looking for:
- Head of Marketing – who will join our External Relations Leadership Team, working to our Director External Relations and alongside our recently appointed Head of Corporate Communications.
- Corporate Communications Manager
- Corporate Marketing Manager
- Internal Communications Manager
- Digital Content Creator
Agile working
This role will be based in our offices at Pembroke Place in Liverpool.
